FDA Food Label Font Size Requirements

The FDA sets minimum type size requirements for mandatory label information. Most required text — including ingredient lists, allergen statements, and manufacturer information — must use a minimum of 1/16 inch type, measured by the lowercase letter "o."

Minimum Font Sizes by Element

Font size requirements vary depending on which part of the label the text appears on and the size of the package.

Label ElementMinimum SizeNotes
Ingredient list1/16 inchMeasured by lowercase "o"
Allergen "Contains" statement1/16 inchSame as ingredient list
Manufacturer name & address1/16 inchMust be legible
Net quantity of contents1/16 inch (small packs) to 1/2 inchScales with PDP area
Statement of identity (product name)1/2 the height of the largest letter in the brand nameMust be prominent and conspicuous
Nutrition Facts — "Calories" valueMust be larger than other nutrient valuesNo absolute minimum specified
Nutrition Facts — nutrient text6 pt minimum for small labelsMust be legible in context
How to measure 1/16 inch: The measurement applies to the lowercase letter "o" in the typeface used. This corresponds to approximately 6–7pt type in most common fonts.

Principal Display Panel (PDP) Rules

The principal display panel is the part of the label most likely to be seen by consumers — usually the front of the package. Type size requirements for elements on the PDP are based on the total area of the PDP.

Small Package Exemptions

Packages with a total surface area of less than 12 square inches may qualify for labeling exemptions, including reduced Nutrition Facts panels and the option to omit some mandatory information — provided the manufacturer includes a phone number or address where consumers can request the information.
